Night Church Kick Off
When it comes to fashion some things keep changing, while other things always stay the same. Pointy cockroach killer shoes went out a long time ago, while Dunlop Volleys were invented in 1938 and keep coming back. And as we start our new night church, things are a bit the same...
When Paul first wrote to the Corinthians, he says "The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (1 Cor 1:18). He also says "I resolved to know nothing while I was with you, except Jesus Christ and Him crucified" (2:1). In other words, the message of the cross cannot change. Jesus' death and resurrection is God's power to save, so even though it seems crazy to lots of people, it's the air we breathe as Christians, and it needs to stay that way.
But if the gospel must stay the same, then often other things must change. Like when Paul says "...if what I eat causes my brother to sin, I won't eat meat again" (8:18). That's a big ask, especially for many Aussies!! But Paul also says "To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews", "To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men, so that by all possible means I might save some". In other words, in church some things are like the Dunlop Volleys - the message of the cross must stay!! But some things are like the cockroach killers - they should have gone a long time ago, for the sake of others, so they might be saved. We've started a new night church, and we're changing things for the sake of others, so they might be saved. A shorter service, jargon-free, and a little funkier. But we're also keeping the Dunlop Volleys - the gospel message of the cross - because only the cross can save people. Come along and check out night church any week @ 6:15pm (5:45 for soup). We'd love to see you. Mike Pittman - Minister |
